Welcome to the Cockermouth Astronomical Society website. Hopefully you'll find all the information you need about our society and astronomy in West Cumbria here. If not contact us.

For more regular updates and members images why not join our Facebook page.

How to Join

If you are interested in joining our society it's really easy. Just turn up to one of our regular meetings and introduce yourself, you don't need to book or pay anything up front.

Our Meetings

We meet on the last Tuesday of most months. Meetings start at 7.30pm and usually close around 9pm, although you'll normally find someone around from about 7.15pm. Check out the programme to find the next meeting date and topics.

Meetings are fairly informal with plenty of opportunity for you to ask questions, seek advice and get to chat to other members. We start with a short round up of the month's astronomy and space news, have a short refreshments break and finish with a talk or demonstration of a specific topic which changes each month.

How to find us

We meet at S Joseph's Church Hall in the centre of Cockermouth, see the map below.

Membership Options

You don't need to worry about membership straight away. When you do there are two membership options;

You can 'pay as you go', a small sum each meeting you attend to help us cover the cost of hiring the hall.

You can join as a Full Member, paying an annual fee (currently £15) which entitles you to attend all our meetings, vote in our Annual General Meeting and borrow certain society equipment such as books from our library or the society telescope.

I just have a celestial 127wq for xmas
After reading the instructions im, still a bit unsure of the set up of the scope
I would like to come along to your meetings at cockermouth to gain knowledge of a subject ive been interested in since a young age.
    After the 20th feb
In the meantime do you have any members from Keswick as this would help
    Looking foreword to meeting you
    Yours Jonathan hunter

    1. Jonathan,

Thanks for your comment. You are more than welcome to bring your telescope along to one of our meetings. Alternatively bring it along to our Stargazing in Cockermouth event on 19th January in the afternoon. I hope that helps. I'm not sure we currently have any members from Keswick.

I know nothing about astronomy but have always wanted to learn about it. I have wanted a telescope for many years but am not sure what to get. Also my health isn't too good (it's an age thing). So I wouldn't be expected to trek into the hills or anything would I?
Are total beginners like myself welcome at the club? As I wouldn't like to be a fish out of water.

  3. is the meeting sill at the same place as before it is William seath from frizington

    1. William. Yes the meetings are still in the same place. st Joseph's hurch Hall, next to the Trout Hotel.
